On Wednesday, April 29, the school held an assembly to kick off Roots Week, an annual celebration of the diverse cultures and backgrounds of the La Salle student body.
Director of Equity and Inclusion Mr. Mario Garza spoke about the importance of upholding the Lasallian values of Respect for All Persons and Inclusive Community, both throughout the weeklong celebration and in daily interactions, highlighting the damage that microaggressions and harmful comments have on members of the community.
Echoing that same sentiment, junior Bennett Okello reflected on his experience as a person of color for his speech. He emphasized how the words people say have meaning, no matter what anyone says, and that insensitive remarks and jokes — even those unintentionally hurtful — can have extremely rippling, detrimental effects on the community.
Following this, Sini-gang, a band composed of La Salle juniors Haylee Nguyen, Isaiah Engelen, Gabe Gallares, and Patrick McGowan, performed “Pasilyo” by SunKissed Lola — a song selected to highlight a genre called OPM, or Original Philippine Music, Engelen said.
Finally, the assembly came to a close with the Roots Walk, a cultural display where students walk across the gym with garments originating from all over the world.

Roots Week helps us remember the gorgeous tapestry of students and culture we have in our classrooms and hallways. The week is full of warmth, beauty, and a reminder to seek to know, celebrate, and understand our community!
