Girls and Boys Basketball Excel Midway Through Season

Both boys and girls basketball have made a slam dunk into 5A, and now midway-through their season, the Falcons are looking to make a statement in the 5A NWOC and State. The lady Falcons are ranked 2nd and the boys are ranked 14th as of right now by OSAA in overall 5A.

Girls Basketball

The lady Falcons are making a huge statement in 5A, being 3-0 in league, and overall 10-0. Having wins over teams like Valley Catholic, old rivals Gladstone, and 6A teams, makes the girls a team to keep watching in the season later on. Midway through their season, the girls still have big games, like Hermiston, who is ranked first in 5A.

On Tuesday, January 5th, the girls were able to beat Hillsboro—a big competitor in their league—54-49. They will face them again at home later on in the season.

Makenize Cook, a senior and captain of the team, says that she feels excited for the rest of the season and the reason why the girls are able to succeed so well is because they play for each other. “We have worked really well as a team, each night a different person sets up and we have great chemistry,” Cook said. “We have been selfless and you can tell that we play for each other and not just thinking about ourselves.” Cook says that playing Hillsboro again will still be a big game, and will be their toughest competitors that are in the NWOC.

The girls’ next game is Friday, January 9th, at home against Liberty at 7:15pm. Make sure to come to the brick oven to watch these girls take on the other Falcons in the 5A NWOC.

Boys Basketball

The boys have started off the season well, with a win over Gladstone, 6A Westview and Valley Catholic. The boys are 2-1 in league, and 6-4 overall. With a strong win over Hillsboro on Tuesday, the boys are looking forward to their upcoming game at Liberty on Friday, January 9th.

Senior Valois Gashongore says the boys were able to bounce back after their game against Thurston. “When Keeston got mono and Reece got hurt, we got down on ourselves. But after the win over Thurston, we were able bounce back and have the win over Hillsboro.” Gashongore says that Wilsonville will be their biggest competitor because they match up well with their bigger players and are smart on the court.

The next time the Falcons play Wilsonville at home is on Tuesday, February 3rd. This will be a big game, because they have played them once before this season, right before winter break, and lost.

Gashongore also added that the team are able to work well with each other because they are friends on and off the court and are able to push each other to work hard and play hard.

The boys’ next home game takes place on Tuesday, January 13th against Parkrose. Make sure to come support your Falcons at 7:15pm!
