On Wednesday, April 30, La Salle held a schoolwide assembly to kick off Roots Week, an annual celebration which aims to highlight the cultural makeup of the school community.
Senior Trey Williams and sophomore Haylee Nguyen began the assembly, introducing junior Vince Faris, who spoke about his Syrian heritage and how his perspective of the country — shaped by the stories and memories of his parents and grandparents — has contrasted with the global image of Syria as a land gripped by war.
Director of Campus Ministry Mr. Carter Powers then welcomed the guest speaker Rev. Jeanne Kaliszewski, a rector at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. Focusing on the connection between Christianity and acknowledging generational roots, Rev. Kaliszewski emphasized the importance of the Parable of the Good Samaritan and appreciating the diverse perspectives of others, even — and especially — when they are different.
Following this, students participated in the Roots Walk, an opportunity to showcase their heritage through cultural dress, displaying garments originating from various areas of the world ranging from Ethiopia to Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, the Philippines, China, and Central America.
Senior Audrey Schuster and sophomore Violet Geyer, along with another member of Oregon Irish Dance Academy, performed traditional Irish dances. Before the assembly closed, members of the audience were given the opportunity to learn a type of Irish dancing called the ceili, a social and group activity which is often performed at gatherings called “ceilis.”
