Alex G hit the stage on the night of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, with a raucous, lively performance at the Roseland Theater, ushered in by opener Los Angeles-based black metal band, Agriculture.
Alex G’s popularity has grown in massive waves, largely encouraged by viral moments on social media platforms like TikTok, Bandcamp, and YouTube in the 2010s. Songs like “Mary” and “Sarah” were the first to propel his name into the wider indie sphere.
Fans have loyally followed Alex G from start to finish, beginning with his early albums like “Trick” and “DSU” to his more recently released experimental studio albums, including the star of this recent concert: “Headlights,” which was released in July of last year.
His newer material has received a generally positive response and strong reaction from his fan base, though opinions occasionally split among long-time listeners who miss his older acoustic roots.
For someone like me, who has only listened to the beats of songs like “Mary” and “Mis” through the comfort of my earbuds, I was not expecting the loudness of the concert and the bass that seemed to pulsate through the floors like a heartbeat.
The atmosphere grew warm, the sheer volume of the instruments ringing out. Though it was a tad overstimulating at times, there was also a community aspect to that sound and the closeness — a shared heartbeat.
Jumping straight into the concert at 8 p.m., the night kicked off with an explosion of sound from the opening band, Agriculture. Their performance filled the venue with intense screaming where individual words were nearly impossible to make out.
Looking out across the venue, it was packed with lots of people and flashing, vibrant colors that cut through the darkness. The crowd loved Agriculture’s opening set, with some vocalizing their approval and eagerly matching the band’s energy.
When Alex G finally took the stage, the room shifted into pure excitement. On the upper balcony level, a woman stood dancing in the very front row of seats, swaying along to the rhythm with her arms raised in the air, completely lost in the performance. While some fans openly discussed how the newest album wasn’t quite their favorite — a sentiment I too even shared — the overarching energy of the night remained undeniably fun.
What I considered to be the peak of the night arrived during the final hour. Alex G began taking requests directly from the audience for older, more beloved songs, including staples such as “Mis.” Fans spread throughout the crowded floor held up their glowing phone screens with song titles typed out in big letters, hoping to catch the singer’s eye.
Alex G played several of the requests, delivering classic tracks that united the entire crowd in a massive sing-along to close out the night.
The concert, overall, was a night worth remembering from start to finish.
