There have been many instances where I have witnessed students being scolded while using earbuds and headphones in class or in the halls. I have noticed that most adults form negative opinions around these short moments of usage, which they view as irresponsible.
However, as a student who actively uses earbuds and headphones for listening to music throughout the school day, I’ve discovered numerous positive impacts that are often overlooked regarding the role they play in students’ lives.
Many adults often view the use of headphones and earbuds in school as distracting and think they have negative impacts on students.
In my experiences, most adults claim that students are “distant” or “off in their own world” when listening to music through headphones or earbuds in school. Despite this common opinion, there are many positive effects and occasional misconceptions regarding their influence on students’ lives at school.
Some of the most prominent benefits I’ve noticed with both myself and other students include improved concentration and focus, boosted motivation, and increased ability to stay calm and manage feeling overwhelmed in stressful situations.
But some students use music as a way to ease their nerves or anxiety and remain relaxed in anxious circumstances, which 75% of high schoolers have reported in school.
For instance, when I enter the boisterous chaos of the cafeteria, I find myself overwhelmed by the noise and surrounding students. Putting in my earbuds and listening to music allows me to overcome that feeling of anxiety and continue to wade through the commotion without any further issues.
While some adults speculate that earbuds and headphones can be distracting and not allow students to reach their highest potential when completing work, I’ve seen that they end up doing the opposite. From what I’ve discerned, students are able to maintain a more positive attitude toward their work when listening to music.
For example, when I get to the last class of the day, I feel absolutely exhausted, and after receiving my assignment, the last thing I want to do is complete it. Once I put in my earbuds and begin to listen to music, however, that lack of motivation disappears.
Based on what I’ve perceived, other students also get into the zone when listening to music during work time — their overall focus becomes remarkably enhanced. Evidence suggests that music promotes concentration and focus.
Despite the many pros I’ve observed, I’ve also witnessed many questionable moments of irresponsible use, including at inappropriate moments and in a manner that is disrespectful.
However, these few irresponsible instances shouldn’t be enough for people to discount the positive impact and the role they play in students’ lives.
Instead of fully banning the use of earbuds and headphones, teachers should set clear expectations and rules regarding their use during the school day.
By enabling students to use them during work time and establishing that they are prohibited during class discussion and instruction, it will overall cause students to feel that the rules are fair — encouraging them to follow them better rather than just banning them entirely.
Teachers should also make agreements with students to use earbuds and headphones respectfully, creating trust instead of assuming they won’t comply.
I also think that teachers shouldn’t make huge deals out of seeing students using them at bad times and should instead offer friendly reminders discreetly, rather than publicly announcing it in front of the entire class.
As a student, I believe that all of us should make an effort to use earbuds and headphones at the appropriate times, but as a young adult, I think that all teachers and administrators who may not approve of their use in school settings should stop letting these brief moments of irresponsibility distract them from their significance in students’ lives.
