As weird as always, 100 gecs impresses fans with an odd mix of sounds that fit together perfectly.

Young duo Laura Les and Dylan Brady, more popularly known as 100 gecs, released their second studio album “10,000 gecs,” and it is just as unique as their first. Despite being originally scheduled to be released by early 2022, “10,000 gecs” was released on March 17, 2023, and they did not disappoint. The 27-minute long, 10-song album is packed full of fun.

After their first album, “1000 gecs,” blew up in 2019 due to a unique sound, they were given their own genre: “hyperpop.” They inspired many new artists to start making their own hyperpop music and gained a huge following.

Unexpectedly, the group almost completely abandoned their genre with this album —  not to say they haven’t lost their touch. This album shows their talent as they explore more genres such as rap-metal with the song “Dumbest Girl Alive,” and mall-punk with the song “Hollywood Baby.”

They made two more ska-inspired songs after “Stupid Horse” — one of the most popular songs of “1000 gecs” — was highly successful.

“I Got My Tooth Removed”

This song is a chaotic story about getting rid of a horrible cavity. A mix of drums and trumpets makes you want to get up and dance during the chorus. Each of the verses is packed full of Les’s fun energy and great vocals. This song has a mix of fast-paced singing and slower verses that make every bit of this unique jam beautiful to the ears.

“Frog On The Floor”

“Frog On The Floor” brings a bouncy beat and calm vocals from Brady that make this song really enjoyable. Verses from Les pick it up a little bit, adding a touch of fun to the catchy chorus. This is just an overall good song that adds a nice touch to the album.

The three singles the group put out to promote the album, “Hollywood Baby,” “Doritos and Fritos,” and “Mememe,” each have their own special quirks about them. From the use of hectic drums in “Mememe” and a hint of ska guitar, to “Doritos and Fritos” bass lines, grunts, and electronic guitar, each of these songs is filled with 100 gecs’ classic use of too much autotune.

“Hollywood Baby”

A fan favorite on the album, according to Spotify’s stream count, “Hollywood Baby” is a mall-punk hit. A great electric guitar line sets up Les’s energetic and loud singing over an intense drum line. Les never disappoints with her vocals, and this song is a great example of her talent.

“Doritos and Fritos”

Les shines through on this song that’s filled with autotune and yelling. A chorus that you can’t help but sing along to makes this song about corn chips amazing. Dylan adds a chorus with some silly lyrics, like “I’m eating burritos with Danny Devito,” and it is one of the best songs on the album in my opinion, making it a must-listen.

“Mememe”

Brady adds more of his own sound to this song with a mix of sounds that all come together into a beautiful creation. The chorus is a little bit repetitive, but the verses in this song make up for it. As the last song on the album, it’s a great way to finish things off.

Other songs like “757” and “Dumbest Girl Alive” are also wonderful to listen to. If you liked their first album, “757” is definitely the most similar to it. Returning to original sounds, they prove they didn’t lose their magic.

“10,000 gecs” was a great addition to their discography, besides how short it is. It was an interesting listen, and I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind for new music.

I’d give this album a light nine out of ten. I’m looking forward to how 100 gecs develops its sound in the future.
