“I think one of the biggest things I brought with me to Oregon from Texas is my use of the word ‘y’all,’” Moudry said. “It’s a part of me. It reminds me of where I grew up and the people I met and the friends I still have, that I still talk to all the time.”

In his second year at La Salle, sophomore Oliver Moudry is continuing to work his way through high school accompanied by his passion for education, love for literature, and open mind for the future.

Before his days at La Salle, Moudry spent 10 years living in Texas, spending most of his educational background in Montessori schools within smaller communities.

“I think one of the biggest things I brought with me to Oregon from Texas is my use of the word ‘y’all’,” Moudry said. “It’s a part of me. It reminds me of where I grew up and the people I met and the friends I still have, that I still talk to all the time.”

Moudry enjoys many subjects such as Honors Algebra II/Trig and AP Computer Science, but he is especially fond of German. He specifically likes the teaching style of German teacher Mr. David Lane who previously taught at a Montessori school.

“I have a more interactive learning style, as for the Montessori style which is why I think I am doing very well in German,” Moudry said.

When not focusing on schoolwork, Moudry enjoys reading horror literature. Scary novels, such as “The Shining” and many other Stephen King books are his favorite. “I like the style of the psychological horror he writes,” Moudry said. “It really provides a smorgasbord of events in his books.”

Outside of his other hobbies, Moudry is also a part of La Salle‘s robotics team, Maker Industries. Despite the season being over, Moudry is very proud of his contributions and the team’s overall achievements. “We didn’t get to state, but we were one place away,” Moudry said.

During his free time, Moudry also enjoys playing video games, such as Overwatch, with his friends. Although he only views video games as a fun hobby rather than a future career choice, he appreciates that they’ve “allowed me to connect with a bunch of people,” Moudry said.

Moudry finds that his ambition for school and a lot of his passions sprouted from his admiration for his dad. “He’s really knowledgeable and good at a lot of things, and that’s the kind of person I want to be,” Moudry said.

Moudry credits his dad for inspiring him to shoot for the rigorous classes while also appreciating the more fun side of their relationship, such as watching action movies together.

Although Moudry doesn’t have any set-in-stone plans for life past La Salle, he hopes to leave Oregon for college, and preferably find his future school either somewhere in the Midwest or back to his roots in Texas.

For Moudry, coming to La Salle was a choice made out of the desire to be in a smaller community and to take part in La Salle’s German program. However, in making that decision, he found that his favorite part of La Salle was meeting the people he now calls friends and all the meaningful connections he’s made thus far.
