The 2019 self-released debut album from the hit duo 100 Gecs can be found across all streaming services.

In 2019, a mysterious duo named 100 Gecs released their debut studio album, “1000 Gecs.”

What is a gec? Why are there 1000 of them? Nobody knows.

With song names like “800db cloud” and “hand crushed by a mallet” the confusion only grows, but I cannot get enough of it.

This confusing and unique duo has amassed an internet cult status following, and this album perfectly highlights why. It is incredible.

The album is categorized under the genre of hyperpop, a viral and fast paced explosion of sounds that has emerged in recent years.

The pitched up vocals of Laura Les, whose use of auto tune in a perfect manner, with the unique production from Dylan Brady, perfectly encapsulate the genre and its loose ends.

“1000 Gecs” spans a quick 23 minutes, but is filled with emotional responses from every song.

Each of the 10 tracks is over before you can begin to comprehend what your brain just heard, with the longest track being only 3:18 long.

With the infectious melodies of “money machine,” “ringtone,” and “xXXi_wud_nvrstøp_ÜXXx,” the listener is left with a brewing sense of fast-paced mayhem.

The entirely self-produced and created album features the mix of Les and Brady. Les, a college student from Chicago, and Brady, a music producer from Los Angeles, form the duo.

Each song takes the listener on a completely unique experience than the previous song. It feels like you are speeding through 100 different albums while being able to enjoy all of them.

My favorites include “stupid horse,” “gecgecgec,” “gec 2 Ü,” and “745 sticky.”

“Stupid horse” is a ska-charged hit that revolves around losing all of your money after betting your money on a horse, hence the name “stupid horse.”

The glitchy, abrasive sound of “gecgecgec” is one of my favorites on the album. It starts with what sounds like a glitch in the Google Translate application that quickly evolves into a dubstep dance club, and it ends off with an emotional serenade. Les sings with her pitched up vocals in a more slow and personal moment at the end of this song.

To perfectly close this album, “gec 2 Ü” takes the listener through an odyssey of longing and desire for love, and the hard driving bass and fast paced rhythm drive this album home.

My favorite song on the album, “745 sticky,” starts, running as fast as it can, with the driving lyrics of “make my money on my own, yeah. Wakin’ up five in the morning, yeah.” The listener is filled with power and confidence from the singer.

This album placed highly on year-end lists in 2019, with The New York Times placing the album at first and tenth on their lists from Jon Caramanica and Jon Pareles. Noisey placed it at the top of their list with the No. 1 spot as well.

The groundbreaking genius of incoherent bass and the speeding pace of this album have set the scene for a booming sound that has no end in sight. The duo has announced the release of their second studio album “10,000 Gecs,” which is set to be released early this year.

I would rate this album a 10/10, and have found myself unable to escape the addictive melodies that keep me coming back.
