“High school soccer was just the best experience of my life,” junior Seamus Gwyn said.

Junior Seamus Gwyn has spent the majority of his life on the field and court and continues to dedicate his high school experience to sports, participating in soccer, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse.

“Outside of school, I like to play basketball with my buddies at the park, and then playing football is a lot of fun too because it’s competitive,” Gwyn said.

Coming from Sellwood Middle School, a school that feeds into Cleveland High School, Gwyn says the influence to go to La Salle came from his brother, Conor Gwyn ‘17.

“Everyone thought my whole family was just going to go to Cleveland, but [Conor] decided to go to La Salle and he had a really great experience,” Gwyn said.

Although Gwyn has played many sports, he says he has been playing soccer since before kindergarten but has faced obstacles in his journey as a soccer player.

“I played club soccer for a while and just didn’t like it, so then I played rec, but I just wasn’t really having fun playing soccer,” Gwyn said.

But that didn’t halt Gwyn from continuing his soccer career. “High school soccer was just the best experience of my life,” he said after being part of the state champion team.

Gwyn reflected on his favorite memory from the 2021 soccer season — “When that final whistle blew and we were state champions, it was just the most amazing feeling in the entire world and nothing will ever compare to it,” he said.

Gwyn hopes to have that same experience in the other sport he has started playing, baseball.

“I started playing baseball about halfway through my sophomore year, and now I’m just all the way committed to it,” Gwyn said.

Gwyn switched his focus to baseball after the lacrosse program here at La Salle could not find enough players to form a team for the 2021 season.

“I was pretty sad that [lacrosse] got canceled the day before our first game because of COVID,” he said. “I got pretty good at lacrosse, I put a lot of work in and now I can’t play.”

Even though Gwyn is not currently in-season for either of his sports, he’s not taking any time off from his commitment to the upcoming baseball season in the spring.

“I’m here till about 8:00 every night… doing everything I can to earn a starting spot on a competitive baseball team,” Gwyn said. “It’s an off-season, but it’s really more work than it ever was before.”

When asked about where his work ethic stems from, Gwyn showered the captain of the soccer and baseball teams, Senior Aidan O’Brien, with compliments.

“Great guy, very caring, pushes you to be the best you can be, very athletic, a great captain, and very committed to everything he does,” Gwyn said.

Gwyn said he sees O’Brien as a role model, and he advises people with aspirations in varsity sports to find their own.

“Find someone that’s going to push you to be better and wants you to be there every single day, and just show up,” Gwyn said.
