Age of Adaline: A Captivating Film

Imagine being born and living a life you love but then becoming ageless. In the film Age of Adaline, growing old without aging was the fate that Adaline Bowman was left to, after an accident at the turn of the 20th century.

The film follows Blake Lively, portraying Adaline Bowman, a 29 year old woman who is pushed into a life of solidarity due to her immortality. Feeling as though she can never grow close to another person, Adaline lives on the run changing her identity every time she moves. Starring alongside is Michiel Huisman who portrays Ellis Jones, a philanthropist who is instantly attracted to Adaline. However in his struggle to understand Adaline, she pushes further away to protect her past.

Overall the originality of this story is astounding. The entire film is captivating and draws your attention without overplaying conflict by adding too much drama. However, throughout the film there are brief moments where the acting is kind of bland. The story needs a lot of emotion and fear but there are parts that are missing that quality, making the acting a little bland.

Blake Lively does a wonderful job to show the lonely yet protective nature in Adaline but she is supposed to be on the run. It seems as though she is very relaxed for living in fear.

Michiel Huisman does a great job to show the fight to get to know Adaline even while she pushes away. Huisman shows the entrancing nature that Adaline has and he shows the normality of living in the moment.

Harrison Ford, who portrays William Jones, Ellis’ father, does a fantastic job to show confusion in the face of the impossible. Ford shows the protective side of fatherhood while also showing the broken heart of the past.

Age of Adaline was definitely a film I would watch again. The unique story is presented with compelling acting. Add that in with flashbacks to show Adaline’s unaging life and you end up with a beautiful story that shows the fight for love and family.

Overall I would give this movie an 8/10.
