On Wednesday, Feb. 19, La Salle held an assembly highlighting winter activities and jumpstarting Better Together.
With teams spanning from basketball and swimming to ski, snowboarding, speech and debate, and equestrian, students showcased the winter sports season while emphasizing the continual significance of one of La Salle’s main annual fundraisers. In the past, Better Together has contributed as much as $146,000 to tuition aid and student programming.
“It’s so critical,” Director of Community and Student Leadership Ms. Adriana Noesi said. “We really wanted kids to be excited and hype about it and also understand why it’s important.”
Better Together, which runs from next Monday, Feb. 24, to Monday, March 10, will aim to bring in around $140,000, with a larger goal of $148,000, according to Ms. Noesi.
As it is a student-driven fundraiser, Ms. Noesi explained that ambassadors and leadership seniors will be assigned a homeroom, where they will check in with students throughout the duration of the fundraiser to answer questions and collect tallies illustrating each class’s progress.
In addition to class games — such as bump and “bubble mania” — Performing and Fine Arts Department Chair Ms. Cha Asokan spotlighted the 21 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards won this year by La Salle students, and the time, effort, and skill required to earn these prestigious creative accolades.
Although in Ms. Noesi’s eyes the assembly itself was a bit rushed, as the student leadership team lacked a class period beforehand to prepare and rehearse due to scheduling, she felt they achieved their goal of balancing enjoyment with informing students.
“We made the best of it, and I still think it came out really well,” she said. “It was really fun.”
Officers of Athletics Trey Williams and Paul Skoro, both seniors, spearheaded the display of winter sports, while juniors Liam Darcy, Ava Bergeson, and Kiernan Kelly, along with sophomore Ben McCaffery and senior Avalon Donnelly, filmed, edited, and produced a video illustrating the ripple effects of Better Together student fundraising.
The video — compiled and scored by Donnelly — was a way to both inspire students and underline how lasting and critical the funds gathered during Better Together are for the community, Ms. Noesi said.
“$150 per person doesn’t seem like a lot because $150 doesn’t buy a tuition here, but… all of our collected efforts make such an impact,” Ms. Noesi said. “It’s a really important fundraiser.”
However, she expressed, it was key for her and the leadership class to blend the essential information they needed to convey with entertaining activities for students.
“It’s hard,” Ms. Noesi said, referencing the stress of the heavy course load and packed schedule many students balance. “They’re busy. They have lots of homework. But you know what? Every once in a while, we do a fun assembly where the purpose is just to have fun and celebrate our community.”
