To celebrate Black History Month, students gathered in the gym on Friday, Feb. 7, for an assembly. Near the beginning, juniors Abigail Baye and Meklit Wondwossen introduced the keynote speaker — Ms. Kimberly Howard Wade — who told the story of her career through three acts, relating it to her experience of the creative parts of life and the performing arts.
She detailed her experience teaching in college and how creativity helped her grow not only within her area of studies, but as a person, explaining how she became too comfortable in her routine and stopped growing within it. She expressed how for her, and for anyone, art can be an effective tool to help break out of that everyday cycle, challenging to push personal limits and grow as a person.
After this, Baye and Wondwossen introduced an entertainment group from Hip Hop Soulsation Academy.
They taught about the history of dances, including breakdancing and krumping, with demonstrations from members of the group and a couple of La Salle student volunteers. They ended with a longer performance, highlighting all of the group’s members and the different dance styles that were discussed.
