Bloodworks Northwest visited La Salle on Friday, May 10, to hold its spring blood drive.
“Anywhere from 30-50 [students participated]; it just depends on how many people sign up for their appointments,” said Lauren Reagan, a representative from the Bloodwork Northwest organization. “We also allow for parents to come and donate … teachers participate too.”
Held semiannually in the fall and spring, students 16 years and older who weigh more than 120 pounds are welcomed to donate blood.
Prior to giving blood, students filled out brief 10 minute questionnaires to register, completed a short health screening — checking iron levels, blood pressure, and heart rate to ensure the student is healthy — then started the blood drawing process, which took anywhere between four to twelve minutes, the speed dependent on the hydration of the donor.
Nurses then wrapped students’ arms in bandages, sending them to a waiting area to eat and be monitored for about ten minutes before they were free to go.
Reflecting on donating this year, senior Jack Gill said “it’s a fun experience because I know it’s going to a good place.”
Echoing this, junior Evan Calloway also enjoyed this event because of the opportunity to serve others. “I just like helping people,” he said.
The blood drive allowed students to help others by contributing to Bloodwork Northwest, which supplies blood to 95% of all the hospitals in the Pacific Northwest, including both the Providence and Legacy hospitals.
