Keep Me Where the Northern Lights Are: La Salle’s 2024 Winter Formal

On Feb. 10, La Salle will host the winter formal in the gym from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

For the first time since the pandemic, La Salle is hosting a winter formal dance.

The dance will be held on Feb. 10, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tickets, with prices ranging from $15 for La Salle students to $20 for outside guests, went on sale on Jan. 22 and will not be sold after Feb. 8. Outside guest passes are available in the main office and must be turned in by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Around this time last year, the La Salle Leadership class held a casual Valentine’s Day dance. This year, they wanted to do a more formal, winter-themed dance to bridge the gap between homecoming and prom, especially for underclassmen who otherwise only have the opportunity for one formal dance a year. Sophomore class president David Sharyan said that the class wants “to bring in a nice formal dance for everyone,” and that “it’s gonna be really beautiful to share.”

The theme for winter formal is “Keep Me Where the Northern Lights Are,” and was chosen by sophomore Leadership students. An abundance of lights and thematic colors — such as purple, blue, and green — will be used to decorate the gym, which is where the dance will take place.

Since the winter formal is going to be like a combination of prom and homecoming, it will include a royal court voted on by students, the decision for which will be announced on a later date closer to the day of the dance.

What to wear is up to you, with most clothing — whether it be short, medium, or long dresses and suits or button downs shirts and slacks — being acceptable for this occasion.

Sparkly, above-the-knee, long or one-shoulder sleeves, asymmetrical, and flowy dresses are trending right now, and for this specific dance, green, blue, purple, and black dresses are in line with the theme. A classic white or black button-up shirt with black slacks and matching shoes will always be in style.

While there are many different stores to find dresses, classic places include Macy’s, David’s Bridal, Windsor, along with online options such as Lulu’s, Hello Molly, Lucy in the Sky, and Princess Polly. For suits, stores like Macy’s, Men’s Wearhouse, and JCPenney have good options.

“Just don’t don’t show up in sweatpants [and] don’t show up in jeans,” Sharyan said.
