Girls varsity captain Mia Skoro said, “My favorite memory was our home game against Wilsonville. We played them previously in the season, but when they came to our home gym, we played a really well rounded game together.”

The girls varsity basketball season, which started on Nov. 15, came to an end on Saturday, March 5 after playing in the first round of the OSAA playoffs. The team lost 26-48 against #4 Ridgeview High School, located in Redmond Oregon.

Over the course of the season, the varsity went 10-4 in league play. They ended the season ranked 13th in the 5A division and third in the Northwest Oregon Conference, which includes schools such as Wilsonville, Scappoose, Rex Putnam, Hillsboro, St. Helens, Milwaukie High School, and Milwaukie Academy of The Arts.

Overall the varsity team scored a total of 1,168 points during the season. Their highest scoring game was against St. Helens where they won 75-27.

To start off the season, varsity hosted a jamboree at La Salle on Dec. 1 and played against Franklin and Hillsboro.

They also played three non-league games against Mountainside, Central Catholic, and Jefferson, of which they won two games and lost one.

The varsity team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for the Nike Tournament of Champions Dec. 18 through the 21. They played against St. Anthony from California, Chaparral from Colorado, Doherty also from Colorado, and Gilbert from Arizona. They won two games and lost two games.

“Our main goal was to just get better and get prepared for our league play,” said senior Mia Skoro. “That was the beginning of the season, so it was crucial to build those connections and friendships off the court, which really would make us play better on the court.”

The team is led by head coach Kelli Wedin and assistant coach James Simms. Their team captains are junior Ella Wedin and Skoro.

The varsity has 13 players on the team and six of them play up from the JV team. There are two seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and two freshmen.

The varsity had their senior night on March 1 for seniors Skoro and Erin Moran. “I actually ended up tearing my ACL one night before my senior night,” Skoro said. “And so we only had two games before playoffs to readjust and switch our lineup and so it taught me that you can’t take anything for granted.”

They also hosted a Future Falcon Night on Feb. 22 while playing and winning against Hillsboro 54-27.

According to Skoro the varsity team raised over $7,000 with fundraisers early in the season. The first was a shoot-a-thon where out of 100 free throws a certain amount was given for each shot made or a flat donation was given. The second was a pie selling fundraiser.

Reflecting on the season, Moran said, “I have been extremely lucky to be a part of such an amazing and supportive program. I’m very proud of my team and the hard work they put in each day at practice that not many people see, and I’m excited to see what they do in the future.”
