La Salle’s Actors Get Ready to Hit the Stage With a New COVID-19 Adaptation of “The Giver”

This fall, La Salle actors have been rehearsing a new adaptation of “The Giver” that has been developed for digital performance by James Rhys, in collaboration with the La Salle theater department and inspired by the book by Lois Lowry.
The actors attend the rehearsals in cohorts getting as many scenes done as possible, while also staying socially distant and wearing a mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The La Salle theater department will be the first to perform the new adaptation. Rhys and drama teacher Mr. Michael Shelton are the only people who have access to the newly adapted script, along with the cast and crew.
“The Giver” characters are played as leaders of a community, unless you are playing Jonas, The Giver or Chief Elder, actors are asked to play every other character in the show which includes other elders, soldiers, dancers, community members, etc.
Although the release date is unclear, “The Giver” will be filmed scene by scene with face masks worked into the costumes. Most of the play will be filmed in black and white, with some exceptions.
