With La Salle’s class schedule being different practically every day, it can sometimes be difficult to know where you’re supposed to be and when. Sophomore Lukas Werner noticed this as an incoming freshman, and decided he wanted to do something about it.

“[I thought] what on earth is up with this schedule, it makes absolutely no sense,” Werner said. “I’m like okay, how can I solve this problem, that is clearly very confusing, [especially with] the whole A [and] B lunch thing.”

At the time, Werner was taking a Stanford app design class online in addition to Ms. Coleman’s Intro to Design Thinking class. “I might as well take the knowledge that I’ve been getting from [these classes and] apply it to the real world,” he said.

The result of this is an app called “La Salle Schedule”.

“I’m really happy with the way it turned out,” Werner said. As of right now, the app has multiple features including showing the class schedule for every day of the week, arranging your lunch according to room numbers, and adjusting your schedule specifically to your lunch. Additionally, there is an inspirational quote, school map, and a homework feature, which lets you write down your homework for the week.

The process of creating the “La Salle Schedule” app his freshman year took Werner roughly two months. “And that was [just] the bare bones version, where it was just ‘A’ lunch and just the first seven days and no settings,” he said. “Over the span of the year, I had a test program going [on] with a bunch of my friends, and they would give me feedback [about my app].”

Werner wanted to get his app information out to La Salle students, so he emailed Director of Technology David Heineck around the time freshmen started to have iPad boot camp.

The “La Salle Schedule” app was listed under optional downloads. Werner got the opportunity to speak at one of the iPad boot camps and explain to freshmen and transfer students what his app did and how it could be beneficial.

“One of my goals [for the app] was to make sure that we don’t have to print on paper all the time, because most freshmen end up getting their schedule paper ripped up, [or take a picture] and then it gets buried way back in their photos,” Werner said. “I figured might as well put it into an app, save paper etc., but I’m also trying to make it so the whole school gets some value out of it.”

In the future, Werner is looking to make updates for his app to make it more flexible.

“I want to… actually dynamically update the schedule instead of [it] just being fixed,” he said. “For example the straight seven schedule is only available on Mondays, so you have to know [if it ever changes.]”
