With only one game left in the season, the La Salle varsity girls soccer team is feeling good about their chance of making it to the playoffs. With an overall record of 7-5-1, they are currently ranked #10 in the state for 5A, and #3 in the 5A Northwest Oregon Conference.

The team consists of six freshman, five sophomores, three juniors, and five seniors. “We are relatively young,” said head coach Scot Rothery. “The team this year is playing together and unselfishly, which makes for enjoyable soccer.”

Team captain and senior Audrey Schelb said, “We’re not ranked too high [in state], but we won [against #26 Parkrose on on October 17] 9-0.” She said, “I think it can only go up, [but] we are definitely going to have some hard games in the future…we just need to pull [it] together.”

Coach Rothery thinks the team has what it takes to make it to the playoffs, which begin Wednesday, Oct. 31. “The girls really care about improving and trying to make the playoffs,” said Coach Rothery. “I think they have a good chance of playing in the postseason.”

The team has worked hard to overcome a range of challenges this season.

“The biggest challenge is creating that team environment with so many different girls from so many different club teams and different skill levels,” said senior and captain Lauren Nebels.

However, the team has been focused on building a strong relationship. “We’ve gotten pretty close [with one another] and we are able to work with each other and be good teammates,” sophomore Ellen Dierckes said.

Captain Audrey Schelb said, “I think we want to continue with the upward trajectory and the positive vibes that we’ve had the whole season.”

Their last league game is tomorrow, Thursday Oct. 25 at home against #21 Scappoose at 7pm.
