iPads Send Locker Use Into Freefall

Many lockers are being left empty at La Salle after the iPads render them obsolete.

Student locker use seems to be at an all time low as many are finding their iPads significantly reduce the amount of supplies they need to have for school. Some students report that their lockers have been rendered all but obsolete by the iPads that have replaced the textbooks and notebook, reducing the supply list for students. The supplies that used to go in the lockers are now on the iPads.

Students have already seen the benefits of not using the lockers. No longer do students need to go to their lockers between every few classes to get books and binders, thereby saving time and making transitions more smooth and less stressful. Now students can spend more time with friends or getting help from teachers. That extra time comes at a high cost—$600—and other problems may occur, such as when a student doesn’t use their locker for an extended period of time, then needs to use it and cannot remember the combination.

However if one never plans on using their locker, this is not an issue. In a poll of 16 La Salle students, only one said they used their locker at least once a week. Many of those questioned said they hadn’t used their lockers at all this school year. Most said the iPads had replaced nearly everything they used to put in their lockers.

If it gets to the point where the lockers are left almost completely barren and unused, a point in the far future, lockers could even be removed to make more space in the hallways. This would save the money previously used to maintain the lockers and by widening the hallways, it would leave more space for commuting students and ease congestion points in the hallways. That point in time may be a long way off, but it is no longer out of sight.
