Freshmen Share First Impressions of La Salle
October 6, 2014
Going to high school can be intimidating, exciting and hectic, especially when you’re a freshman. With classes at La Salle in session now for more than a month, freshman have had a chance to form first impressions of the 2014-2015 school year. The La Salle Falconer staff asked several freshmen to share what they thought of when they first met the teachers, went to events, and their thoughts on high school in general.
Every month La Salle comes together as one and joins at Christ the King for an all school mass. The first school mass theme of 2014/2015 was “Ohana”, meaning family. Emily Miller, freshmen on the girls JV soccer team, says “I thought it was hot but I liked the theme.”
Freshmen, Megan Lyver, is on the girls JV soccer team and is in the school’s band. Some freshmen may not have enjoyed mass, but Lyver did. “My first impression of mass was it was really cool having everybody in the same building and going to church together,” she said. “It felt really unified.” Mass is a good way to remember that La Salle is one big family. A family that grows every year.
Every freshmen has at least one fear when moving to high school. It seems that some fears have already disappeared. Lyver said, “I was most scared about making new friends and the amount of homework but I now know I have nothing else to worry about.”
Another thing that can worry freshmen are the teachers. Mr. Voge, physics teacher, robotics club instructor, and pre-calc teacher is known for his beard and his personality. “My first impression of Mr. Voge was that he was super funny and nice.” Hopefully all freshmen had that same first thought.
Religion may not be the most exciting class to some, but religion teacher, Ms. Nitschke, makes a difference. Lyver’s first impression of her was that, “Ms. Nitschke, is one of my favorites. And all of the other teachers are always really nice to me in the hallways and in the class room.” Miller says that “I thought she was really funny.” The staff at La Salle are more than just teachers.
A lot of the freshmen want to get involved in the community, which includes going to the dances and the football games. Lyver went, and had a good time being with her friends. “I did go to the welcome back dance and football game. I thought they were really fun and I had a great time that night.” Miller said, “It was really fun and the student section was really fun.”
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be difficult. Having a great staff, and close knit community events make it easier. It’s been a great start to the year and it will only get better.
