The Martian Flies to the Top of the Box Office

Julianna Sprague, Staff Reporter

The Martian, starring Matt Damon, is a new major box office hit from the director Ridley Scott, who has also directed movies such as Alien, Gladiator and American Gangster. The Martian made its debut on October 2, 2015, and has been raking in money at the box office in the weeks since.

At the start of the movie, a group of astronauts are forced to leave their mission on Mars when a horrible storm arrives. As the astronauts blast off back home to Earth, Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is left behind after being presumed dead. Watney must then survive with limited supplies and must use his skills from being trained as an astronaut and his scientific botanist mind to survive without contact to Earth on a strange planet. When NASA discovers Watney, they use every effort to try getting him home safely. Watney’s crew members from his mission to Mars, however, make their own plan to rescue him.

The powerful acting throughout the entire film is one of the reasons why this film is so enticing. Beyond Matt Damon, some of the other well-known actors in this film include Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Kate Mara, Aksel Hennie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mackenzie Davis and Donald Glover.

Another reason why this film is so captivating is because it is very scientifically accurate, which helps to make the movie feel particularly real. This movie also pulls at the emotions of its viewers and makes the audience want to jump into the film to help the characters. It surprises the audience and has them on their toes, never knowing for sure what will happen next.

The film includes both comedic and dramatic scenes, but most of all, the movie keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. It is appropriate for a majority of ages; however, some scenes are a bit intense. Overall, The Martian is a movie that keeps the audience captivated all the way until the very end.
