Coldplay, a British rock band with five members including the lead singer Chris Martin, released their latest album on Oct. 4, called “Moon Music”. This album includes 10 songs and features various artists such as Elyanna, TINI, Burna Boy, Jon Hopkins, Little Simz, and Arya Starr. Typically, artists don’t incorporate that many artists into one album, which is what makes it so unique. Other details such as the song titles, lyrics, and the timing of the melody transitioning are what make this album eccentric.
The band which was formerly known as “Pectoralz,” and later on “Starfish,” formed in London in 1996. Throughout their time as a popular British band, they’ve won multiple awards for their music. One example of this is in 2002, when they won the British Album of the Year, Grammy Award for the Best Alternative Album, and a nomination for a Mercury Prize for their debut album, “Parachutes.”
This album is especially interesting to me because of the quirky song titles. Most titles are in all upper-case letters with only lower-case “i’s,” but there’s also one song in all lower-case and no spaces, and one song with a rainbow emoji for the title.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this album and finding the notable features of each song.
I chose five songs to focus on that are my favorite from the album because they all have.
feelslikeimfallinginlove
“feelslikeimfallinginlove” is the second song on the album and memorable by its title alone. The song itself is amazing because it’s very uplifting and light, which makes it easy and enjoyable to listen to. The lyrics are creative and they pull you into an unexpected karaoke session. I also like the use of drums in the background because I feel like love songs typically include guitar or piano, but the drums are a great change of pace, and I think they make this song special.
This song talks about being aware that pain could be an outcome of love, but knowing that it’s worth trying. This is a good lesson to keep in mind throughout life because anything could end badly, but that shouldn’t prevent us from trying.
“I know that this could hurt me bad / I know that this could feel like that / But I just can’t stop”
The following lyrics are an example of how passionate this song is and how creative the lyrics are. I like the use of the word “lifeline” because — as it’s something that people depend on to live — it’s different from most love songs. The lyrics make this more unique than the ones we hear often because he’s not just repeating how much he loves this person, but he compares them to something he needs to survive.
“It feels like / I’m fallin’ in love / You’re throwin’ me a lifeline / Oh, now for the first time / I know I’m not alone”
WE PRAY
“WE PRAY” is a stunning and extremely complex song because of the amount of featured artists and the topic of the lyrics. This song is profound due to the focus of praying for an Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and killed by police for wearing her hijab incorrectly.
“Baraye” was a song released on Sept. 20, 2022, by an Iranian artist named Shervin Hajipour, which represents the sadness and disappointment in the death of Amini regarding religious beliefs. “WE PRAY” makes references to “Baraye,” emphasizing the sentiments expressed in the earlier song.
“And so we pray (we’ll be singin’ ‘Baraye’)”
Other than the level of emotions and feelings in this song, I appreciate the amount of people and instruments such as guitar, drums, piano, and more that are included. It’s nice to hear all the different voices and sounds that bring the whole song together, which in this case is extremely significant because they are all unifying their voices in support of Amini, as well as everyone else that has been negatively affected and mistreated due to their religious beliefs.
GOOD FEELiNGS
The title speaks for itself. This song is really just about feeling good. “GOOD FEELiNGS” mentions several things that tend to make people feel good, such as dancing, sunshine, and the moonlight, which helps to lift the mood of both the song and the listener. I would say this is a great song to listen to when you’re feeling down or need some motivation because you can’t help but want to smile and dance to it.
The following lyrics are telling us to hold onto the things that make us happy, so we can cherish that feeling and look back at the good times and memories whenever we’re in need. Specifically, think of one of those bad moments that everyone gets, like sleeping through your alarm, being late for school, forgetting something important at home because you were running late, or feeling like you look like a complete mess. Those are the moments where this song can immediately turn your day around and make it a thousand times better because of all the joy it carries.
It’s so positive and light that it simply spreads happiness to its listeners because the repetition of these lyrics stick with you and can’t help but paint a smile on your face. Personally, when I feel down, I like to listen to uplifting music like this that makes me want to smile and sing along. This song is going to be my new go-to and will be constantly replayed.
“All those good, good / feelings (don’t ever let, / don’t ever let them) / Don’t ever forget those / good feelings (don’t ever let / them go, no) / (Don’t ever let, don’t ever let / them) don’t ever let them / go”
iAAM
“iAMM” is an acronym for “I am a mountain.” Like several other songs on this album, it’s very fulfilling, with themes of strength and resilience as indicated by its title. It is about perseverance, which I really like because I, along with lots of other people, need motivation sometimes to do necessary things that we don’t look forward to doing such as working on homework, going outside on a rainy day, or simply getting up in the morning.
The following lyrics are great examples of how we endure things that hurt us, but we can’t give up.
“Stood on a sea of pain / Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain / I’ll be back on my feet again / ‘Cause I am a mountain”
This song shows themes of resilience and self-love that reflect rising above our issues, which teaches us important lessons that we can use throughout our lives such as never giving up and staying positive through all the difficulties that are thrown at us.
ALL MY LOVE
Similar to “iAAM,” “ALL MY LOVE” talks about perseverance, but the difference is that “ALL MY LOVE” is meant for someone else. When listening to this song, I imagine a fairytale setting where a prince and princess are in their own world dancing outside in the rain. The way that the song carries itself through the melody seems magical to me, meaning unrealistically perfect.
“You got all my love / Weather it rains or pours, / I’m all yours”
I feel like the message of this song is that no matter what we go through in our lives, we always have at least one person who loves us more than anything, and is there for us through all of the highs and lows.
“We’ve been through low / Been through sunshine, / been through snow / All the colors of the / weather / We’ve been through high / Every corner of the sky / And we’re still holding on / together”
There are lots of instances where I’ve felt like giving up on someone who repeated the same mistakes over again and hurt me, but this song reminds me that there is a reason why this person is in my life and I can’t just throw that away when I could be helping them instead. This is especially important because if you’ve been through countless amounts of things with someone and they’re still in your life, that’s exactly where they should remain.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to each and every one of Coldplay’s new songs and I would definitely recommend giving them all a listen.
Along with vibing to the catchy lyrics and melodies, I notice a pattern of important ideas and messages that are given to us through these songs.
