Maya’s Mellow Rainy Day Playlist

Maya Smith, Editor

With the rainy season just around the corner, Oregonians are getting ready for the cozy and laid back time spent inside during the showers of a rainy day.

Rainy days are perfect for cuddling up with a blanket and decompressing from whatever your week tossed in your direction, or for completing certain tasks you have been putting off.

A great way to enjoy the mellow mood from a rainy day is to accompany anything you’re doing with music. Below are nine songs great for a mellow rainy day.

Breezeblocks – alt-J

With upbeat instrumental and soft vocals, ‘Breezeblocks,’ combines these elements together into a seemingly relaxing song. But if you listen closely to the lyrics, they add an element of eerie-ness despite its positive sound.

Don’t Delete The Kisses – Wolf Alice

The playfulness of Wolf Alice’s song ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ is meant to make you think of a special someone you have in your life. It mixes emotions of nervousness and bubbly happiness into a cute and sweet tune.

Telescope – Cage The Elephant

‘Telescope’ by Cage The Elephant is from a third person perspective, about someone reflecting back on the life they have lived, and where they are now. The nostalgic feel and lyrics of this song calls listeners to action, advising them not to waste their time.

Overthinking – Acid Ghost

Acid Ghost’s song ‘Overthinking’ came out on their 2015 album. It is a low-fi indie tune with its bittersweet harmony, producing the perfect feeling of mellowness for a rainy night.

Alrighty Aphrodite – Peach Pit

Wavy guitar starts out Peach Pit’s song ‘Alrighty Aphrodite,’ which continues with lyrics full of beautiful imagery. This song makes you want to get up and twirl around in your room while you are listening to this indie-rock song.

The Funeral – Band of Horses

The Band of Horses song ‘The Funeral’ consumes your mind, blurring anything going on around you. In the beginning of the song it is subdued, then progressively builds up, ending with bold instrumentals.

New Slang – The Shins

With its carefree instrumental, ‘New Slang’ has the sound of an indie-folk song, with a twist of alternative. Due to its light hearted sound, his song is best listened to in the car during a rainy day.

Fade Into You – Mazzy Star

Soft airy vocals and quiet tambourine are what make Mazzy Star’s song ‘Fade Into You’ so dreamy. This song makes you feel as if you are immersed into a fantasy world, perfect for listening to on a cold and rainy day.

Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

With a one-minute-and-thirty-five-second guitar introduction, one of Pink Floyd’s most well known songs, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ continues with the raspy singing of David Gilmour. This classic song creates a tranquil atmosphere with its melancholy tone.
