If you do not know freshman Luke Thompson by name, you may know him by his daily act of kindness. Luke is a La Salle student with one mission: to give back.

Every day after break and A lunch, Luke can be found holding the door that leads into the academic hallways by the front office. This single act of kindness has now become part of his daily routine, and it is something that has been positively received by many in the La Salle community.

“I think that it is very generous, and it shows a lot of respect and character,” said senior James Janke. “I see him living by the banners.”

Luke believes holding the door is not a large act of kindness, but it is the thought of it that counts. “You don’t have to do these huge momentous acts of kindness to make a difference,” he said. “You just have to get the ball rolling.” Luke believes that his one small act can inspire other students to do one small act of kindness a day as well.

Luke said that his goal is to fill a niche. “If you see a place, if you see something that needs to be done just do it yourself. Because if you don’t do it, it’s likely no one else will… If you see a place in our school or community that needs somebody to help, just fill that niche,” Luke explained. “I think that just making [high school] better in whatever small way I can will give back to the community.” Luke added.

Luke plans on continuing this good deed every day until the end of his senior year. “I do it every single day, and I have never been late to class once,” which is an accomplishment he takes pride in.

Junior Emma Hibler said, “I always see him running down the hallways to get to the door before anyone else, and I just think it is such an amazing and selfless act to do… He does it every day, which is really nice.”

Ultimately, Luke said, “I just wanted to do a nice thing. It is my way of being nice to people.”
