Girls Tennis Springs Into The Season
March 21, 2018
Girls tennis has had a strong opening this season, winning two pre-season matches in the last week, with their most recent victory, over Stayton, occurring yesterday.
The girls on the team say that they feel very confident this year. Senior Lauren Berry states that “both singles and doubles have done very well so far.”
The team has undergone multiple changes this season. For one, the team got a new head coach named Tino Fabros. He has helped out for both the boys and girls teams in the past, but this is his first season as head coach. Another notable difference in the team is the absence of the eight seniors who graduated last year.
However, senior Natalie Sherrill states that the team size is “about the same after losing seniors and gaining a bunch of freshmen.” On top of gaining freshman, there are eight new seniors that are stepping up this year: Alexis Han, Rebecca Ly, Lauren Berry, Natalie Sherrill, Bri Cavanagh, Michaela Pinto, Grace Gosse, and Abby Green-Hoke.
Last year, the girls tennis team was able to send two singles players to state, Rachel Primack, who has now graduated, and Ashley Smith, who is now a sophomore. While that in itself is a great accomplishment, the girls team is hoping to send even more players this year.
“I think the team is looking really strong this year,” says Natalie Sherrill. “Since we lost a lot of our good seniors last year, we’ve had to rebuild our top varsity but we’ve been doing well so far.”
According to the girls, their most challenging matches this season will be against Sandy, on April 19, and Wilsonville, on April 26.
Make sure to watch the girls at their first regular season match against St. Helens on April 10 at 4pm.
