“Wunderwaffle”: La Salle’s Unofficial Breakfast Club
January 25, 2017
The library is closed. It’s a late start, and at 8:30 in the morning the only thing that you can think of to do is wander the halls, trying to find someone to have a conversation with. Then, you smell it: a sweet, warm scent that floats through the air, enticing you to follow it.
You end up outside of one of the math rooms — the sign on the door says “Killgore”. Inside, a group of seniors are engaged in a buzz of conversation as they stir and laugh, cooking the food that creates that vanilla-and-chocolate smell.
It comes from waffles.
Wunderwaffle is a group that cooks waffles on late-start Friday mornings before school in room 130 of La Salle, using supplies that students bring from their homes. The group is mostly made up of seniors, and are watched over by Mr. Killgore, a math teacher.
“I can’t remember how it started,” said senior Dominic Colpo. “I think we just said, ‘Wow, waffles would be really good! Let’s have waffles on Friday.’” The group has been cooking together for about two months now, with each person bringing ingredients to every meeting.
Wunderwaffle is not an official club. There are no official members, and no official budget. Because everyone spends their own money to buy ingredients, if someone outside of the group wants a waffle, they have to give some money to pay for it.
Those who get waffles from Wunderwaffle seem to love the breakfast treat. One senior, Lydia Pearce, regularly gets waffles from the club on Fridays. She says, “I really like how it provides me with a good start to a Friday morning. Fresh waffles for a donation? Don’t mind if I do!”
Mr. Killgore, the math teacher who allows Wunderwaffle to use his room, isn’t opposed to the group at all. He says that he usually gets his own waffles.
No matter how Wunderwaffle operates, the informal club is an example of La Salle’s neighborly community: people getting together for no other reason than to spend time together and create something.

I love walking through the halls and having the sweet scent of waffles serenade my nostrils every Friday morning. Unfortunately, I am unable to taste these waffles, I am gluten free(although we do have the gluten free club what what love it) but I do love smelling the waffles every Friday as it provides a pleasant scent to the hallways.
