Mr. Doran to Receive First Ever Carol Feltz Bluhm Award
February 22, 2016
Mr. Michael Doran, social studies teacher and moderator of the Speech and Debate club, will receive the first ever Carol Feltz Bluhm award during halftime of the Thursday, February 25th girl’s basketball game.
According to Ms. Andrea Burns, La Salle’s Vice President of Foundation and Major Gifts, “This award recognizes current La Salle educators who go above and beyond what is required of them in the classroom by embracing responsibilities in coaching or moderating OSAA-sanctioned activities”. This is the first year the award is being given.
Carol Feltz Bluhm, class of 1980 graduate, left a legacy at La Salle. Placed on the Wall of Champions in 1980, Feltz Bluhm was a four year varsity athlete and two time First Team All-State athlete in basketball.
In addition, she acted as Editor in Chief of the school yearbook, the Accipiter, was on the softball and tennis teams, was elected Junior Class President, and won Homecoming Queen in her senior year. Feltz Bluhm sadly passed away at the age of 52 in 2014 after fighting cancer for eight years.
Feltz Bluhm always appreciated the hard work and support of the teachers who supported her, according to Ms. Burns. Now, in order to recognize the current teachers who do the same for current students, her family created an endowed fund in her name, as well as an annual award in her honor.
A selection committee has the task of choosing a teacher to receive the award. The selection committee includes the Principal, Athletic Director, Vice President of Foundation and one male and one female student participant in an OSAA activity as selected by the Principal and Athletic Director.
This year’s committee selected Michael Doran to honor him for his years of service as head moderator of the Speech and Debate Club.
As moderator of the Speech and Debate Club for five years, Mr. Doran has touched many students’ lives.
“I appreciate the intelligence, talent and motivation of our Speech & Debate team students,” Mr. Doran said. “To be recognized in this way represents a truly proud accomplishment for me.”
Make sure to be at the February 25th girl’s basketball game to watch Mr. Doran receive the award during halftime. Congratulations to Mr. Doran on all his hard work and positive efforts.

Mr. Doran has guided our son through Speech and Debate for three years. His commitment to the team is outstanding. Many long days on week ends starting at 6:00 am and not ending until late evening, Mr. Doran is committed to be sure his students have every opportunity to succeed. How he can get our teenage son to school early on Saturday, dressed in a suit for a very long day is enviable. The growth and confidence our son has gotten from Mr Doran’s guidance is a life long gift. This award provided by the family of Carol Feltz Bluhm is a well deserved acknowledgement of Mr Doran’s work. I am so proud our son has had the opportunity to attend La Salle. A very nice article.

As someone who followed Carol’s career as a basketball player at La Salle, who coached her younger sister Maureen and taught and enjoyed her sister Diane’s contributions to our girls’ basketball program, and who has appreciated her family’s many contributions to our school over five decades, I compliment you are your fine article about the award established in her name. It is a fitting award in Carol’s name, and Mr. Doran is a wonderful choice as the award’s first recipient. I was at the game and the award ceremony, and both were examples of the many things that make this school what it is, of the people who make it what it is. Well done and thank you for the article. Carol would, I know, approve of it all.
