Why You Should Join the Polar Plunge this Year
January 22, 2016
Flyers around the school have been posted, the announcements have invited you to join, but what really is the Polar Plunge?
La Salle Prep has been doing the Polar Plunge for about 4 years, and if you’ve never done it before, you should seriously consider signing up this year. I am helping to coordinate a La Salle team this year, and I am excited for this opportunity to help out a good organization that I’ve been volunteering for my whole life.
This program that the money goes to is Special Olympics Oregon, which is a program that provides organized sports and competitions for anybody in Oregon with intellectual disabilities. All you have to do is raise a minimum of $50 to participate- which is a lot easier than you think. Asking 10 people to give you $5 each to support Special Olympics Oregon is quick and painless. When you sign up, you will get a free t-shirt and a link to your page to make it easy to send to relatives or post on your Facebook to get donations. I posted my link on Facebook and easily got $60 on my page from my friends and family after 2 days!
As a team, we have a different theme every year and never fail to dress the part. In the past we’ve had “red and blue”, pajama themed, a complete red-out, and a Hawaiian theme last year, because who doesn’t love running into the Columbia River in a grass skirt?
Thankfully, we only run into the river once. Some people stay on the beach for 24 hours in a warm tent, plunging every single hour. There’s many different teams in different outfits and various food stands selling warm pizza, drinks, and a lot of other food.
This is a fun and inclusive event that won’t take much time or energy out of your day to sign up and participate in. The date of the 2016 Polar Plunge is February 27th, so you have until then to raise that money and sign up to join our team! Even if you missed our recent meeting, it’s not too late to sign up!
