Humans of La Salle: Thoughts on the 2016 Presidential Election
January 20, 2016
With the 2016 presidential election getting closer, the range of candidates can definitely bring many different opinions and discussion. For this edition of Humans of La Salle, we asked students about their own personal opinion on the presidential race so far.
Sierra Grant, junior:
“Bernie Sanders, because he is the only candidate taking climate change seriously and recognizing it as a threat to the world and will work to reduce fossil fuels and create 100 percent renewable energy. He is also going to work to make health care possible for all people despite their financial standpoint. Lastly his economic plan is the only one that makes the middle class and poverty its main focus, for example raising the minimum wage and lowering extreme taxes.”
Alex Smith, Chris Farrow, Kyle Wright, juniors:
Alex:
“I think that our candidates are too focused on tearing down one another and not focused enough on what is best for the country.”
Chris:
“I feel at this point I have not made enough of an educated decision to fully follow a candidate, but I will vote in the next election so I better start my research and hopefully I make the best choice for our nation.”
Kyle:
“I haven’t gotten too much into the debates and candidates to be an expert, but I have seen enough of Bernie Sanders to know that he would be a good president for the U.S.”
Xochitl Parra, junior:
“I can’t wait until we have Kanye as a candidate because then we’ll have a candidate that meets my expectations.”
Patrick Dowhaniuk, junior
“I am not a really big political guy but I know for sure that I agree with some of what Donald Trump says about the immigration. I have not really listened in on debates but I do know there needs to be a change because immigration is such a big factor today in America.”
Kiley Russell, sophomore:
“I’m praying to God [that] Trump doesn’t become president and I don’t agree with what he has said about immigration and border control.”
Katrina Beslic, senior:
“I don’t know that much about it but I think Hillary Clinton has some pretty good points in this race and it will be interesting seeing a woman as our president.”
Ben Wright, senior:
“I personally think that the debate has been very heated but some candidates are taking low blows, [and] that’s not cool to me. Overall I’m excited to be able to vote in my first presidential election.”

Supporting Hillary Clinton because she’s a woman is just as sexist as not supporting her because she’s a woman. If we really want gender equality, gender should not be a factor at all.
To anyone that cites Clinton having a vagina as a reason for support, would you also support Carly Fiorina or Sarah Palin if they were the only women in the race? I doubt it.

I think it does not matter which president gets elected I mean, they all follow the same agenda.
