Ten Weeks In, Seven NFL Teams Stand Out
November 18, 2015
The NFL finished 10 weeks of play on Monday, November 16th, and the playoff contenders are continuing to dominate, while rebuilding teams are already looking forward to the draft and the future of their legacy. The Super Bowl is up for grabs and no team has a sure spot in the playoffs.
However, many teams have emerged as strong playoff and possibly Super Bowl contenders. Here is a team by team ranking looking at the best teams in the league:
- New England Patriots – the Pats are easily the best offense in the league and have stomped past many teams, and now boast a 9-0 record. Quarterback Tom Brady has played great football and tight end Rob Gronkowski is an unstoppable force. The two of them together offer too big of a challenge for opposing defenses. They also have a solid defense; however, it hasn’t yet been tested by another particularly capable quarterback. The Patriots struggled against their nemesis the New York Giants this week but a last second field goal secured the win.
- Cincinnati Bengals – the Bengals have surprised the league and started 8-0 for the first time in franchise history. They lost their first game this week against the Houston Texans. They have a balanced offense with lots of depth. It’s been a great year for quarterback Andy Dalton. Young running back Jeremy Hill has been unable to replicate his outstanding numbers from last year and running back Giovani Bernard has been inconsistent. The defense hasn’t been tested by a great offense yet but the Bengals lost a close game against the Texans on Monday Night Football.
- Carolina Panthers – the Panthers have started 9-0 behind MVP candidate Cam Newton and has had the best running game in the league. Running backs Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert have done a good job splitting their role and the Panther’s strong defense has been fueled by a great secondary. Linebacker Luke Kuechly has continued his defensive domination and racks in the tackles every game. His presence alone makes this defensive unit formidable.
- Denver Broncos – As of late, Denver’s offense has been atrocious. Peyton Manning has showed his age and leads the league in interceptions. However, Denver’s defense has kept the team afloat. Injuries to DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib’s suspension have held this defense back in recent weeks. After starting 7-0, the Broncos have lost the last two games to beatable teams in the Colts and the Chiefs.
- Green Bay Packers – This team’s solid offense is struggling as of late. The Packers have lost 3 straight and last week lost to the struggling Detroit Lions. However, MVP caliber quarterback Aaron Rodgers has lots of weapons even without Jordy Nelson. Eddie Lacy has struggled and James Starks hasn’t been able to carry the running game alone. The strong Packers defense has been weakened by injuries and inconsistent play. They have allowed struggling offenses to make big plays week after week.
- Arizona Cardinals – the Cardinals have started the season 7-2. Their good offense is led by a veteran quarterback, Carson Palmer. Last year the Cardinals were NFC favorites but Palmer tore his ACL, which took them out of the Super Bowl picture. Running back Chris Johnson has showed glimpses of his former self and has also joined running back Andre Ellington as a one-two punch. On Sunday night, the Cardinals won an important division game against the Seattle Seahawks. Carson Palmer solidified his spot as one of the best quarterbacks with a win in Seattle.
- Minnesota Vikings – the Vikings have quietly taken the lead in their division away from the Green Bay Packers and have a 7-2 record. The injury to Teddy Bridgewater in week 9 demanded concern, but he was able to play last week after clearing concussion protocol. Adrian Peterson continues to play at a high level and the emergence of Stefon Diggs as a good receiver has added a new dimension to the Vikings. The defense has become one of the best this year and has helped the Vikings push for the playoffs.
Many teams have been inconsistent and have accumulated losses due to small injuries to key players. The Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, played without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for multiple weeks and suffered losses as a result. Also, the Dallas Cowboys, 12-4 last season, have lost 7 games in a row without Tony Romo. Once these inconsistent teams get their key players back, the playoff picture still has the potential to be shaken up.
One theme in the NFL this year has been season ending injuries occurring nearly every week, and the number of sidelined players continues to grow. Some key players whose seasons have been cut short are Jamaal Charles, Arian Foster, Jordy Nelson, and Kelvin Benjamin. All of these players were huge components of their teams and these injuries have almost certainly impacted the playoff picture.
The NFL has also featured some emerging stars that received playing time due to veteran players with injuries or illnesses. Star running back Devonta Freeman has emerged as the lead running back in Atlanta after his week 3 break-out performance. He has 1,141 total yards so far this year to go along with 11 total touchdowns. Another standout star is rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper, who has given the Oakland passing game life with 45 receptions for 653 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Overall, the 2015-2016 NFL season has featured rising stars and injured veterans, contributing to a jumbled playoff picture that is still leaving everyone guessing.
