La Salle Football, Aiming for a Playoff Berth, Starts Season 1-1
September 17, 2015
With the varsity football team having achieved a 1-1 record so far, the team is looking forward to this week’s game against Hillsboro as an opportunity to get a step closer to their main goal, winning a spot in the playoffs.
The team started off the season with their 27-0 win at Milwaukie on Friday, September 4th. The game took off with an exciting touchdown from Nick McCoy, La Salle’s new quarterback, who ran the ball across the line. The second score was also from McCoy, leading the team with the score of 14-0. The next touchdown was made by Makahi Hurst off a pass from Nick McCoy, increasing the Falcons’ lead against the Mustangs. Once again, McCoy madea pass to Jake Lyver, who ran the ball and scored an 8 yard touchdown, finalizing the game with a score of 27-0.
Moving to last Friday, September 11th, the Falcons’ first home game was a nail biter as Parkrose built a strong lead in the first half, while La Salle remained scoreless. However, La Salle was able to narrow the score significantly heading into halftime.
This streak started with a pass from Nick McCoy to Makahi Hurst, which lead to the first touchdown of the game. The second was run in by McCoy, making the score 14-25. Again, McCoy ran the ball in after performing a nice move, which cut the lead down to only 5. With only three minutes left in the last quarter, Quinten Pearson scored the last touchdown of the game.
La Salle’s comeback fell short, however, with the final game score 26-31, and the Broncos took the win.
Last year was the first year with new head coach and La Salle graduate Aaron Hazel, who lead the team though its transition into the 5A division. That season ended with a record of 1-8 and Hazel is hoping to become much stronger as this year progresses. The team’s goal is “to be competitive in every game and fight for one of the five playoff spots in our league,” Hazel said.
