Girls Tennis Has Strong Start in 5A

Spring sports started up at the end of February and the girls tennis team is off to a great start this season. The girls tennis team was undefeated for many past years in 4A, so the challenge of coming into 5A was eagerly accepted.

The team’s record so far is 6-2, and they have been consistently ranked as one of the better teams in the conference. To decide the winner of each competition, the wins of each varsity singles and doubles teams are added up to see who won more individual matches. Coach Devenney said that “by the end of this week I hope we’re going to be 8-3 at the worst.” He is enthusiastic about his team’s future matches and likes to see them competing with intensity.

This season has been made more difficult with unpredictable weather that has wreaked havoc on the schedule. Many of the matches have been rained out. In 5A, each canceled match must be made up the next day if neither team has a match. So, practices have been replaced with make up matches. Also, with the continuous rain, make up matches have been postponed, so the team still has many matches left on the schedule.

The adjustment to 5A has been smooth and the team is looking forward to playing more matches as the season will soon come to a close. The team has high hopes of doing well at districts and then state, regardless of the new competition of 5A. Coach Devenney said that “currently we are tied in second for districts.” Wilsonville is the team’s biggest rival and it is projected that Wilsonville will be number one, but Coach Devenney has faith that La Salle will play well and take second.

Come cheer on the girls tennis team at their next home matches: today, April 22nd, and tomorrow, April 23rd at 4 p.m. The tennis courts are located parallel to the track.
