2015 Grammys and the Rise of Sam Smith

The 2015 Grammys were one to remember. It was an amazing night, especially for Sam Smith, taking home four Grammys.

Sam Smith is a British singer-songwriter, most famous for his hit “Stay With Me”, off of the album “In the Lonely Hour”. He took home the Grammys for record of the year, song of the year, best new artist, and best pop vocal album.

Sam Smith started his fame in October 2012, being featured in Disclosure’s famous song, “Latch”. To continue his rise in stardom, he was nominated for and won both 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll.

Sam Smith says every song in his most famous album, “In the Lonely Hour”, is about how none of his loves has loved him back. This explains the name, and the meaning of every song.

I asked multiple La Salle students to see their thoughts on Smith and this album. Freshman Grace Gosse says she loves Sam Smith: “I don’t listen to his music all the time, but he is definitely one of the most talented artists that I know of”.

Sophomore Clare Brinkman says that her favorite songs are Stay With Me and I’m Not The Only One. Brinkman says she loves his entire album, and she strongly respects him as a person.

While Smith was having a successful night at the Grammys, rapper and songwriter Kanye West had a rough time holding himself back before expressing his feelings about Beyonce not winning album of the year and losing to singer-songwriter, Beck.

West being later interviewed explained that he did not plan to do this, but the voices in his head were telling him to go on stage and let everyone know that Beyonce should have won, as a repeat of the incident at the 2009 Grammys with Taylor Swift. Instead of not saying anything, in 2009 Kanye actually grabbed the microphone and stated that Beyonce should’ve won, not Swift.

Besides the awards, the show started out with an amazing performance from AC/DC singing “Rock or Bust” and “Highway to Hell”. There were many duets including Hozier and Annie Lennox singing “Take Me to Church” and “I Put a Spell on You”, Sam Smith and Mary J. Blige singing “Stay With Me”, and many more.

Other than the performances, the fashion on the red carpet was my personal favorite of the night. Even though Taylor Swift didn’t receive any Grammys, she was a crowd favorite for fashion. Swift wore a custom blue Elie Saab halter dress with a voluminous skirt.

On the other end of style, Rihanna wore a Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown which many people say did not look too great on her. This long pink dress had a ball gown skirt that started at the top of the ribs, and was rather very large. Sophomore Delaney Miller says, “I would compare her dress to a large pink lufa”.

Singer-songwriter Sia wore a white wig which covered the majority of her face, while famous dancer on reality show Dance Moms, Maddie Ziegler, wore the same wig but with her face shown. Maddie has portrayed Sia in her last two music videos for Chandelier and Elastic Heart. At the Grammys, Sia performed, hidden the entire time, while Maddie danced along with comedian Kristen Wiig. Sia’s style is controversial because she never showed her face to the public.
