Continuing an annual tradition, the sophomores went on a retreat on October 7 to bond with their classmates and develop themselves to becoming upperclassmen. The day’s theme was transforming from lambs to lions, so to help the students with this transformation, everyone was put into small groups to complete many activities.

The first set of activities consisted of many games including ice breakers such as: four corners to get everyone excited for the day, performing skits showing a ‘lamb to lion’ scenario that was fun and exciting since the students put a lot of thought into them, a circle where questions are asked and if you agree with or the question applies to you then you step inside, and a fun game of ‘headbands’.

After these activities, smaller groups went off to take on the challenge of ropes courses to help in building teamwork and trust within the class. Some of these courses included attempting to balance a ‘boat’ (large square of wood set up on a smaller piece) until it was steady, then attempting to sit down while keeping it still balanced.

They then ventured to four blocks, two larger two smaller, and a rope in the middle. Each student swung from a certain block while using the rope to swing to another block, while later attempting to fit every student onto a single block, which required lots of teamwork throughout the group.

The last activity helped student show concern for others by having to crawl through a ‘giant spider’s web’ without touching the wires. If someone were to touch the wire, they would choose whether to take on a punishment, such a talking in song for the rest of the activity, or to make the entire group start over.

This helped students in not only having fun, but also being given the opportunity to put others before themselves.

“I had a very great time and really bonded with my classmates,” sophomore Nikki LaFrance shares. “It was great to have our teams to go through the challenge courses with so we could get closer to new people.”
