Girls Soccer Looks to Make Statement in 5A

One month into league play, the varsity girls soccer team is looking to make at statement this year in the 5A Northwest Oregon Conference. So far, this statement is looking very reassuring with the team being ranked 4th in state in 5A and being 6-2-1 with their only losses being to Scappoose, who won state last year, and a very competitive Rex Putnam.

The team is led by senior captains, Veronica Horton, Kate Christoferson, and Natalie Stone. These captains have a lot of experience at the varsity level considering the fact that they have been on varsity all four years of high school.

However, as a result of losing eight seniors from last year, the team is fairly young. With only five seniors and having now gained three freshman, the team is looking to grow into and expand on their potential. However, the amount of young players is not affecting the way the team plays or the level of competition the team has, said Christoferson.

“I think that we have a great team and have surprised a lot of our competition with our aggressiveness and ability to make goal scoring opportunities” said Christoferson. “So far we have been doing an excellent job of working as a team and staying positive and I think we have a lot to look forward to as league continues.”

“We work harder in practice and we have changed our defensive formation to better fit the 5A competition,” said Christoferson. “However, other than that, we are the same team and have the same goals as we did last year. Each player has a voice on and off the field, and leads in a different way. Even our Freshman keepers have stepped up to have a voice on the team.”

The girls team is looking forward to the upcoming games left in the 2014 season. “I think our toughest opponents will be Hillsboro and Wilsonville. To win these games, we need to work together and be positive towards each other” said Co-Captain, Veronica Horton. Hillsboro has a record of 7-0-1 making them ranked 6th in state. And Wilsonville has record of 2-6-1 and is  a big threat to La Salle because of how large of a school they are. “No matter who we play, we will come out ready to take them on.”
