The La Salle varsity girls tennis team has had a good start to their season, obtaining a respectable record of 2-3. Their next match is this Friday, April 15th at home vs. Liberty, and then they will participate in the first ever Milwaukie City Tennis Tournament taking place this Saturday, April 16th.

Regarding the team’s performance so far this season, varsity coach and health teacher Mr. Devenney said, “I’m pleased that my seniors and juniors are showing that they are really prepared and the new students, you just see them getting better every day.”

Sophomore Sabrina Sandberg, beginning her second season on varsity, said, “There’s a great community there to support everyone, whether we win or lose, and that’s what I think makes a quality team.”

“The biggest thing this season that I am excited about is, now that we are 5A, there are three 5A schools in Milwaukie: Rex Putnam, Milwaukie high school, and La Salle, and we are hosting the first ever Milwaukie city high school championship,” Mr. Devenney stated. “We are the first to do that, and down the line other teams are going to do it and there is going to be a real rivalry between the three schools.”

With three matches down and more to come in their future, the tennis team is paving the way this year for many seasons to come. The varsity team includes six seniors, which leaves lots of room for freshman and sophomore junior varsity players to step into the senior’s varsity spots next year.

“You’ve got the team that you’ve got, but that team also has six seniors on it, and you start with twelve,” Mr. Devenney explained. “So I am going to lose half of my team at the end of this year. I also have to build for the upcoming seasons, and that I have been excited about doing.”
