Taycee Wedin has stood out to not only the coaches and the rest of her peers since she joined the girls basketball team last year and landed herself a spot on varsity as a freshman guard. Since then she has continued her success and has high hopes for the rest of the season, after the team ended league play 16-0, and is now in the state playoffs.

Wedin was a significant contributing factor to the team’s state championship win last season, and she hopes to have the same successful win this year.  Last year’s win has been an inspiration for the whole team, Taycee said. “We are so many other teams’ targets and teams are really practicing hard to beat us,” she said.

Keeping in mind that their opponents are working hard too, Taycee and her teammates work hard to juggle their academics and sports every day. However, all of their efforts go towards one shared goal. “We would like to be undefeated in league again, and to of course, win another state title,” Wedin said.

The girls basketball team’s success hasn’t solely been based on their skill. The amount of time between practices, and commutes to games have made Wedin and her teammates’ relationship strong. “They’re all like my sisters, we tell each other everything,” she says. “We treat each other like family.”

While Wedin’s teammates have become her second family, La Salle welcomed Wedin’s mom, Kelli Wedin, as the girls varsity head coach two years ago. Taycee explains the dynamic on the court, with having her mom as the coach: “She treats me the same as she would every other person on the team, [and] sometimes she’s even a little harder on me,” she says. “But we are very close.”

Taycee’s desire to play started at an early age. “I got into playing basketball when I was young,” she said. “My mom and dad both played and I always wanted to.”

Ms. Wedin has been by Taycee’s side throughout her basketball career. “My mom pushes me to be the best I can be,” she said.

Although she is focused on this season, Wedin’s thoughts have already stretched farther than her high school career, saying that “I would like to play at the next level, preferably Division 1 basketball, while having my education paid for.”

Taycee’s constant dedication to her sport and academics have directed her towards her goals. Stay tuned as Taycee and the rest of the girls basketball team advance in the state competition!
